WHAT IS YACHT ROCK?

The term “Yacht Rock” was coined by a group of comedians including J.D. Ryznar, Hunter D. Stair, Lane Farnham and Steve Huey when they produced an 11-episode run of videos called “Yacht Rock” for Channel 101 back in 2006. The hilarious videos lovingly lampoon the soft-rock artists of the late seventies and early eighties such as Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, Christopher Cross, Hall & Oates and Steely Dan. While the “Yacht Rock” videos were entirely fictional, they were based on lore and according to Michael McDonald came “pretty close to reality” in a couple cases.

Ultimately the genre was, as Kenny Loggins puts it in his new memoir “Still Alright,” “backfilled with songs that fit a particular motif” and a genre was born. The songs are known for having sophisticated harmonies, meticulous production and a certain musical optimism. Even songs about bitter breakups somehow come across as light and airy. The Doobie Brothers’ “What a Fool Believes” and Ambrosia’s “Biggest Part of Me” are prime examples of Yacht Rock.

Now SiriusXM airs a channel entirely dedicated to Yacht Rock fueling online arguments about whether songs by Gerry Rafferty, The Eagles, Olivia Newton John or even Abba qualify as Yacht Rock. Led by 3-time Grammy™ nominee, Kevin Sucher, The Docksiders, while loyal to the concept, are less concerned with the argument than in taking these songs (and songs that are “Yacht Rock Adjacent”) to audiences with pitch perfect harmonies so that they can relive the happy memories of the seventies and eighties. “We approach these ‘Yacht Rock’ songs with great respect and reverence, and play them as close to the radio versions you remember as possible,” says Sucher.
